How to Survive a Midlife Crisis
Your perception about life changes during middle age. It is either you become wiser and braver due to your innumerable experiences or you are oblivious and fearful because you do not want to get old. Midlife crisis can be tough and overwhelming. Some fear it while others are looking forward to experiencing new things in life.
Midlife crisis causes many to gravitate towards depression and anxiety. Age is not the ultimate contributing factor of midlife crisis. There are those who are going through major changes and events in life that just coincides during middle age like divorce, death or job loss.
How to overcome a midlife crisis on your own?
As you approach middle age, you are more aware and conscious about the things you did in the past and the things you want to do. You feel that you are racing against time. You want to be as successful, as accomplished and as wealthy as other people your age. However, this can take a toll on your physical and mental health.
1. Embrace change.
Change is inevitable. In terms of time and age, it will not slow down for you. When the reality of approaching old age hits you, it alters your view towards your life in general. You begin to worry about your health or your children. You become more aggressive when seizing opportunities. You become braver in making decisions.
2. Learn to be creative.
For so many years of working or taking care of your family, it is normal if you feel exhausted or burnout. Pick a hobby. Indulge in your interests. Do something that will inspire you and initiate creativity. Through these hobbies, your mind will be relaxed and occupied with good thoughts.
3. Meditation helps.
Meditation improves your overall health and wellness. It reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. It helps enhance your concentration and awareness. These days, there are various meditation video tutorials that you can do at home or even at work. It takes some time for you to get a hang of it but eventually, you will sense a big change in you.
4. Minimize using social media.
Stay off from social media. Different social media platforms can be very toxic for your well-being. It causes you to feel jealousy, ungratefulness, discontentment, worthlessness that may lead to depression and anxiety. Make use of your time and stop comparing your life and other people.
5. Be with like-minded people.
Surround yourself with good people. Be with people who share the same values, respect your choice and inspire you to be better. Reconnect with old friends. Get involved in your community. Interacting with people will make your life happier and fun.
6. Live a healthier life.
Eat a balanced meal. Get enough exercise and sleep. Middle age is a crucial stage because this is when you start feeling not as robust and energetic as before. Your main concern now is to stay healthy and to avoid getting sick. If possible, get full body check-ups once a year to assess your overall health.
7. Be grateful and appreciative.
People who are not thankful and happy about their life are the easiest target of a midlife crisis. They are stressed out because they are constantly complaining about the things they do not have. Instead of showing appreciation for their family, friends and work, they want to be superior to anyone else.
8. Set goals.
Try doing the things that you have put on hold for years. It could be travelling, opening a business or finishing your Master’s degree. List down the activities you want to do in the next years to come so that you have something to look forward to.
9. Be happy.
Happiness is different in each person. For some, happiness could mean lots of money while others define it as being with family. No matter what your definition of happiness is, make sure that it truly gives you joy and peace of mind. Being able to open your eyes every day is enough reason to be happy and grateful.
10. Ask for help.
Do not feel disheartened when you feel that you can no longer manage your midlife crisis. It is okay to ask for help. It is not a sign of weakness but it shows how brave you are in admitting that you cannot handle the situation anymore. Approach a trusted family member or friend to assist you in looking for the best therapist.
